What Xero is actually built for

Xero isn't expensive by accident. Every plan includes unlimited users — a bookkeeper, an accountant, and you can all be looking at the same books at once. It connects to over 1,000 apps, from payroll to inventory to point-of-sale. It's built for a business that already works with an accountant, or plans to.

If that's your business, Xero is a genuinely strong choice, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. This page is for the narrower case: a business of one, where none of that collaboration infrastructure has anyone to use it yet.

Pricing breakdown

Xero has three tiers: Early at $25/mo, Growing at $55/mo, and Established at $90/mo (new customers get Early at $2.50/mo for the first six months). There's no permanent free plan on any tier — the closest thing is "one month free," a trial, not a tier.

Wise Ledger has two tiers: Free ($0, forever, with real limits) and Pro ($5.99/mo, or $45.99/yr — $3.83/mo effective). Annualized, Xero Early costs $300 a year at list price. Wise Ledger Pro costs $45.99 a year. That's the entire comparison in two numbers, before either product does anything else.

Feature by feature

Invoicing & payment collection — This is a real gap, not spin: Xero lets a customer pay an invoice directly through Stripe, ACH debit, or Tap to Pay. Wise Ledger lets you record that an invoice was paid — it doesn't collect the payment for you. If getting paid faster through the invoice itself matters to you, that's a point for Xero.

Bank data — Xero reconciles bank feeds automatically. Wise Ledger imports a CSV or Excel statement you upload yourself. Same trade-off as the QuickBooks comparison.

Taxes — Xero calculates sales tax automatically across more than 13,000 US jurisdictions via Avalara, and handles 1099 contractor reporting. Wise Ledger produces a tax estimate from your transactions — useful for planning, not a substitute for jurisdiction-level sales tax automation.

Multi-currency — Here Wise Ledger is ahead: multi-currency is included in Pro at $5.99/mo. On Xero, it's Established-only, at $90/mo — Xero's most expensive plan.

What Xero has that Wise Ledger doesn't — unlimited multi-user collaboration, 1,000+ app integrations, in-app payment collection, and automated multi-jurisdiction sales tax. If you need any of these today, Xero is the better fit.

Two things to know before you switch

Wise Ledger is Android only

There is no web app and no iPhone app today. Xero's own pitch is "manage your finances from anywhere, anytime" — send invoices, capture receipts, and view reports from your phone, backed up in the cloud. That claim is accurate, and it's the direct opposite of where Wise Ledger stands right now. If you're on iPhone or need a desktop browser, Wise Ledger won't work for you.

Wise Ledger is cash-basis only

Income counts when payment arrives, not when you send the invoice. Xero isn't restricted to cash-basis reporting the way Wise Ledger is. If your business needs accrual-based statements, Wise Ledger isn't the right tool yet.

Who should actually use which

Wise Ledger — a freelancer or sole trader working alone, who wants real financial statements without a monthly bill.

Xero — a business with a bookkeeper or accountant who needs their own login, more than one person touching the books, in-app payment collection, or automated multi-jurisdiction sales tax.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wise Ledger a real alternative to Xero?

For a one-person business with no collaborators, yes. For anything involving multiple users, in-app payment collection, or sales-tax automation, no — that's Xero's territory.

Does Wise Ledger have a free plan like Xero's trial?

Not quite the same thing. Wise Ledger's free plan is permanent — $0 forever, capped at 30 transactions and 3 invoices a month. Xero's "free" is a one-month trial; every plan afterward is paid, starting at $25/mo.

Can I collect payments through invoices in Wise Ledger?

No. Wise Ledger lets you record that an invoice was paid, but there's no built-in payment gateway — no Stripe, ACH, or card processing. Customers pay you outside the app, and you log it.

Is Xero worth it for a freelancer?

If you're working with an accountant, need multi-jurisdiction sales tax handled automatically, or want customers to pay invoices directly through the app, yes. If none of that applies and you're working alone, you'd likely be paying $300 a year for capacity you won't use.

See what you've really made — and what you're still owed.
